MRS Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, Wife of Ondo State Governor, has trained 180 needy and indigent women across the three senatorial districts of the state.

Anyanwu-Akeredolu said this at the official opening ceremony of a one month training and empowerment on Monday in Akure.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training was organised by the office of the wife of the governor in collaboration with the Ondo State Ministry of Women Affairs and Foundation for Wives of Ondo State Officials (FOWOSO).

The governor’s wife, who was represented by Mrs Adebunmi Osadahun, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, said that 60 beneficiaries were drawn from each of the three senatorial districts of the state.

Anyanwu-Akeredolu explained that each of the participants would be empowered with start up kits at the end of the training.

According to her, “what we are doing is not political but to take women out of poverty and reduce the gender based violence among women.

“We are determined to better the live of our women and alleviate poverty from the society.

“In the world today, especially in Nigeria, majority of single mothers are outside doing nothing; social vices increasing day by day while prostitution is everywhere but if they have a job to do, it will take some of these things out.

“And with this training and empowerment, it will make live comfortable for our women at home,” she said.

She, therefore, charged all the beneficiaries to see the training as an opportunity for them to put food on their  tables and add to socio-economy of the state.

The governor’s wife, who said that the gesture would be a continuous one, called on other women who could not make the list, to be patient as their turn would soon come.

“Apart from this one today, the Ministry of Women Affairs trained and empowered some girls last week through the Total Energy with start up kits.

“Also about a month ago, through the Federal Ministry of Labour, 400 women were empowered, so, Ondo State will not relent in its determination to reduce the rate of poverty among our women.

“Meanwhile, the office of wife of governor is ready to work and partner with the relevant ministries and agencies to ensure every woman enjoys the dividend of democracy,” she said.

Mrs Temitope Daniyan, Adviser on Gender and Coordinator of the training programme, said 2,000 women benefited from the training and empowerment programme in 2018.

Daniyan, who explained that the beneficiaries were aged between 20 and 40 years, indigent women and needy, said that they would be trained on seven different skills including tailoring and soap making.

According to her, single women and widows are among the beneficiaries.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Saidat Oyeleke from Ondo West Local Government, appreciated Mrs Akeredolu for the gesture, saying that it would also assist their husbands at home.

“I have been looking forward to learn tailoring for years and with this training, my dream has come true,” she said.(NAN)
