THE National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) says the agency is engaging relevant stakeholders to harness space technology spin offs.

The Director-General of NASRDA, Dr Halilu Shaba, said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Saturday in commemoration of the World Space Week in Abuja.

The UN General Assembly, by resolution 54/68 of December 6, 1999, proclaimed World Space Week marked annually from Oct. 4 to 10.

The week is set aside to celebrate the contributions of space Science and Technology to the betterment of human condition, while the 2022 theme is  “Space and Sustainability.’’

Shaba said that space technology has always been a part of human lives and is a resource that requires continued use, hence the sustainability.

“You cannot talk about sustainable development without space and sustainability means where you use resources without depleting them.

“For you to use the resources without depleting them, you must have adequate knowledge about the resources and that is where the space technology starts from.

“Space technology is always there at the beginning to identify resources’ availability, who will use them without depleting them, which is why space is important for sustainable environment.

“To that effect, never like before, we are engaging relevant, major stakeholders who are working with us, not only on earth observations, but also to harness other resources in space,’’ he said.

According to him, ”we are working on collaborations to monitor issues of flooding and security, among others.” (NAN)
