THE Acting Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dauda Biu has directed Commanding Officers to step up nationwide special operations to apprehend violators of legal speed limits.
Biu who gave the directive in a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem on Tuesday in Abuja, ordered that vehicles of violators be impounded.
The FRSC boss gave the directive following a fatal crash along Maiduguri-Damaturu road, reportedly caused by violation of legal speed limits.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 37 people died in the accident.
Two Toyota buses and a Volkswagen Golf car were burnt together with some of the 45 people inside the vehicles.
“There were 45 people, consisting of 26 male adults, 13 female adults, three male children, and three female children, involved in the crash.
“Out of which 37 victims comprising of 20 male adults, 11 female adults, three male children and three female children were killed.
“The remaining eight victims who were rescued alive have sustained various degrees of injuries,” he added.
According to the FRSC boss, preliminary report attributed the crash to excessive speed and tyre burst.
Biu therefore, directed all route commanders to intensify special patrols to engender sanity on the highways.
He also tasked them to intensify sensitisation and advocacy campaigns while conducting effective patrol operations on all routes.
The acting corps marshal warned drivers against endangering people’s lives through reckless.
He enjoined the public to dial FRSC toll free line 122 or call the National Traffic Radio 107.1 FM whenever there’s any traffic emergency anywhere in the country. (NAN)
