NIGERIA will be represented at November’s world weightlifting championship in Houston, United States, US, by a four- man weightlifting team that has already started its camping in Abuja.

The four lifters to fly the nation’s flag are the quartet of Mariam Usman, Oluwatoyin Adesanmi, Yinka Ayenuwa and Gideon Aigbefoh.

The lifters are training under the watchful eyes of National Head Coaches, Andrew Ekanem and Evelyn Onyenakazi.

Chibudom Nwuche, president of Nigeria Weightlifting Federation, NWF, said on Tuesday, October 27, that the four lifters were picked on merit based on their performances in previous international outings. Nwuche said: “We are taking only four lifters to Houston and we are confident they will do well at the championships. The four were picked purely on merit.”

The NWF boss further disclosed that Lawrence Iquaibom, a Nigerian weightlifting buff and a member of the weightlifting federation, had been invited by the International World Federation, IWF, world weightlifting governing body, to officiate at the championships which is a Rio 2016 Olympic qualifier.

“We are happy one of us, Lawrence Iquaibom, will be in Houston as a technical official. The International Weightlifting Federation, IWF, has named him as one of the referees for the championship and this is a plus for Nigerian weightlifting,” Nwuche said.
