THE Kwara Director of Sports, Coach Tunde Kazeem, has urged private individuals and corporate organisations in Nigeria to sponsor sporting activities, to further enhance the development of the sector.
Kazeem made the call on Wednesday in Ilorin, while receiving the athletes who represented the state at the just concluded U-18 and U-20 Athletics Championship in Ilaro, Ogun.
The director, who praised the Kwara government for providing an enabling environment for sportsmen and women in the state to thrive, charged corporate bodies to invest in the sector to reduce youth restiveness and to encourage them to build a career in sports.
The organiser of the reception, Mr Jide Odedeji, lauded the athletes for making the state proud at the trials.
He said that the competition had exposed the athletes and officials to the rudiments of track and field events, ahead of world championships.
Kazeem said he sponsored the championship out of passion for athletics, promising to sustain the tempo of sponsorship to attract more athletes.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 35 athletes, in both male and female categories, represented Kwara at the trials.
They won six gold, two silver and six bronze medals.
