NIGERIAN Nationwide League One (NLO), the third tier league of Nigeria football, on Wednesday expressed shock and deep sadness over the death of a football administrative icon, Mr Chidi Okenwa.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that until his demise on Tuesday, Okenwa was the Chairman of the Nigeria National League (NNL), the second tier league of Nigeria football.
He was also the Chairman of Enugu State Football Association as well as executive committee member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The late football administrator had also served in various capacities in football administration nationwide.
The NLO Director (South-East), Mr Ebere Amaraizu, told NAN in Enugu that Okenwa’s death was personally devastating to him.
Amaraizu described the late football administrative icon as one of his close friends especially in the “great football family in Enugu”.
Amaraizu noted that “one cannot question God on certain issues preserved for Him alone.
“I, therefore, on behalf of the Chairman of NLO Board, Mohammed Alkali, the entire NLO league board members and secretariat as well as NLO club-sides in the South-East condole with the family of the late football administrative icon.
“I also condole with the entire members of the Enugu State Football Association as well as the entire soccer family in Enugu and the whole country on his death.
“I sincerely pray for the repose of his soul in the Lord.”
The NLO director noted that Okenwa was always there to bridge the gap when there was any lingering football matter.
“Okenwa ensured that NNL embraced Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV), an initiative of Inspector-General of Police, Mr Mohammed Adamu, meant to sensitise footballers to shunt cultism and violence and to remain focused.’’
