CHIKA Chukwumerije, Technical Director, Nigeria Taekwondo Federation (NTF), said on Friday that the federation would look out for outstanding athletes at the National Trials/Open Championships to contend with the national-ranked athletes ahead of the 12th African Games.

Chukwumerije told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that  Kyorugi event would feature in all categories at the championships scheduled to take place from June 25 to June 27 in Abuja.

He said that featuring Kyorugi at the event would enable the NTF to get the best athletes in all categories for invitation to the national camp ahead of the 2019 African Games (AG).

“We are not limiting participation of athletes to the championships; it is also open to others who are equally good and can challenge the national-ranked athletes.

“The plan is for taekwondo athletes in and out of the national ranking to compete favourably in categories and prove their mettle; nevertheless, only outstanding athletes will stand  chances.

“Our preparations for AG will be given serious attention, as selected athletes will be invited to the national camp for adequate preparation for the Games coming up in August,’’ he said.

The NTF director said that the national trials became necessary as athletes yet to be on the federation’s national ranking were making efforts to be identified.

According to him, all athletes are good; but it is through such championships that they can prove their current forms and seek to make waves in their careers.

Chukwumerije, a three-time Olympian, said that adequate programmes would be put in place to keep the athletes in top shape as soon as the national camp would begin.

NAN reports that Nigeria will feature in the taekwondo event at the 12th African Games holding in Rabat, from Aug. 19 to Aug. 31. (NAN)
