Sri Lanka gets tough on human smugglers as arrests rise
Africa
THE Sri Lankan government has vowed to get tough on human smugglers who were sending people overseas illegally by boat, despite several arrests and warnings recently.
According to police, the latest attempt was foiled by the police special task force in the early hours of Monday.
It said five men, who allegedly smuggled people to Australia illegally by boats, were arrested during raids in the Mugaththuvaram beach in Kattankudi in Sri Lanka’s east.
The five boats used for human smuggling were also taken into custody.
The police said the suspects transported people by boats to Australia illegally and had violated immigration laws.
The suspects were handed over to Kattankudi police for further investigations.
The initial investigation revealed that they had charged nearly 4,200 U.S. dollars per person for the illegal voyage to Australia by boats and dinghies. (Xinhua/NAN)
