SPEAKER of Sri Lankan Parliament, Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, on Thursday endorsed the certificate on the Online Safety Bill, a statement from the Department of Communication of Parliament said.

The Bill would come into effect as the Online Safety Act No.9 of 2024, said the statement.

The bill was passed in the parliament with amendments after a two-day debate on Jan. 23 to 24.

Earlier, President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government said the new law would be used to deal with cyber crimes, including child abuse, data theft and online fraud. (Xinhua/NAN)
