The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has resolved to get autonomy from state governments and end friction between them and their state governors

THE Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, CSSLN, has promised to fight to get autonomy and end the friction between state legislators and governors. The aim is to halt the trend where speakers are always impeached under circumstances allegedly masterminded by the executive.

The CSSLN has also set up an electoral committee which will manage the election of new executive council to run its affairs for the next two years.

Michael Adeyemo, speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, disclosed this to journalists on Friday, July, 31, in Abuja at the end of the conference’s inaugural meeting. He said: “We just had our inaugural meeting, where we deliberated on issues affecting legislative business in the state. We discussed the way forward as regards the legislative responsibility of our members to the people. We also set up the electoral committee which will evolve the election of a new executive council to run the affairs of the conference.”

To ensure stability in the state parliaments and reduce the friction between the state executive and the legislature, Adeyemo said: “The CSSLN will tackle the issue with all seriousness. Attempts were made by the last administration to address the issue, but obviously they met a brick wall. So, we will start all over again to ensure that state Houses of Assembly get their autonomy like the National Assembly. We have raised this issue with the executive too. And we believe that as democracy continues to grow with time, we will have some level of stability in the state Houses of Assembly.”

Meanwhile, the CSSLN has commended President Muhammadu Buhari on his commitment and passion to fight insurgency and corruption in the country. This was contained in a statement by Abdulkarim Lawan, acting chairman of CSSLN and speaker, Borno State House of Assembly.

He said: “We are very impressed by the steps and actions with which Mr. President has demonstrated his zeal and passion to end insurgency in Nigeria. Having identified it as the biggest threat to development in Nigeria, we also note Mr. President’s resolve to fight corruption in the country. We have resolved to contribute our quota by giving our unalloyed support in the fight against insurgency and corruption through our constitutional legislative roles. We shall make relevant laws, if necessary, to rid our country of insurgency and corruption.”
