SCIENCE, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) experts in Ibadan have stressed the need for all stakeholders to bridge the gap of resources and capacity in the education sector.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the exports spoke at a workshop for STEM teachers in Oyo State.

Mr David Afolayan, a Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment (GLOBE) partner, said “there is a global need for more and better interventions in the education sector.”

” The world is now approaching education through practical methods.

“There is a gap of resources and capabilities of teachers from what we see; fake and unqualified teachers abound.

“The qualified ones need training and re-training, that is what the GLOBE workshop addresses.

“Our focus is on both the public and private schools so that teachers are better equipped to teach STEM subjects to students, ” Afolayan added.

Dr Olakunle Ogundele, the Zonal Coordinator, Association of Nigeria Geographers, and lecturer at the Department of Geography and Planning, Lagos State University, Ojo, emphasised the need for curriculum review.

“Geography needs to be a compulsory subject for science students at the secondary school level.

“Its knowledge will aid the students’ understanding of other science subjects,” Ogundele said.

NAN reports that the workshop was attended by representatives from 22 secondary schools in Oyo State.
