Marcel Ifejiofor, Anambra State commissioner for Works, has cautioned residents of Anambra against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels to stem road damages.
Ifejiofor said this while on inspection tour of the Nando Junction-Onitsha-Aguleri-Adani Highway, Ogbu-Mgbede-Onitsha/Adani road Umueri and the SARS–Awkuzu-Abube Nando roads that were ready for handover to the state government.
He noted that the state government had stepped up campaign against illegal dumping of refuse.
Government had vowed to bring the full weight of the law on anyone caught engaged in such acts.
The commissioner commended the contractor, New Idea Construction Ltd., for doing a nice job on the roads.
Ifejiofor emphasised that it cost the state a lot of money in constructing road networks to alleviate the sufferings of the people.
He urged people to help to safeguard the roads, stressing that debris blocking the drains and erosion were causes of road failures.
Ifejiofor said: “as water finds its way on to the roads, it washes away part of the road, creating gullies and potholes that damage the roads’’.
Igwe Ben Emeka of Umueri, also Managing Director, New Idea Construction Ltd., said the company had done thorough monitoring of the road during the retention period.
He, then, thanked the state government for entrusting the company with the job.
The commissioner was accompanied of the inspection tour by Emeka Ohuoha, permanent secretary of the Ministry, and other management staff.
