A Sokoto Chief Magistrates’ Court on Monday remanded an 18-year-old student, Aliyu Sanusi-Umar, who was charged for alleged reckless driving and causing the amputation of the leg of a female student, Fatima Suleiman.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Sanusi-Umar was arraigned for the offences of reckless driving, driving a car without a driver’s license, causing serious injury and causing the amputation of human leg.
Mr George Idoko, the Police Prosecutor, told the court that the defendant drove the car in a dangerous manner and crushed Suleiman’s leg shortly after she wrote her final year examination at Khalifa International College, Sokoto.
Idoko said that the victim was seriously injured and transported to Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto (UDUTH), where her leg was amputated due the fracture and severity of the mutilation of her leg that needed urgent medical attention.
He said the incident occurred on Thursday and Suleiman was still under medication at UDUTH, adding that the offences contravened the provision of Penal Code laws.
When the charges were read before him, the defendant pleaded not guilty.
Chief Magistrate, Hauwa’u Haruna-DogonDaji, ordered the defence counsel to file a formal application for the bail of the defendant.
She remanded the accused in the custody of Correctional Center and adjourned the case until Aug. 29, for further mention. (NAN)
