THE Super Eagles on Tuesday, November 17, qualified for the group phase of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers after a 2-0 win over a stubborn Swaziland side.

Second half goals from Moses Simon and Efe Ambrose saw the Eagles through and put them on course for a sixth appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2018.

The match was goalless in the first leg in Lobamba, Swaziland on Friday, November 13. That seemed to have put pressure on the Nigerian team and coach Sunday Oliseh that only victory would be good enough to keep the Nigerian team in contention.

Mindful of this, the Eagles started fiercely, but they were unable to break down the resolute defence of the Swazis who had boasted that they would be fighting for a score draw in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. True to their boast, the first ended in a barren goalless.

The second half was, however, better for the Nigerian team as Simon broke the deadlock six minutes after resumption with a grand free kick.

That notwithstanding, Nigeria was on the edge for most of the second as an equaliser would have meant Swaziland would go through with the away goal rule.

However, Ambrose sealed the victory with a goal nine minutes to the full time as he connected well to a free-kick from Sylvester Igboun that ended in the net.

Nigeria is now waiting for other qualifiers across Africa to be divided into groups.
