A 55-year-old man, Rasaq Amoke, who allegedly stood surety for two suspects but failed to produce them when needed, on Wednesday appeared before an Ojo Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State.

Amoke is standing trial before Magistrate L. J.K. Layeni on a count charge of failure to produce a suspect.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Dr Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on April 14, at the Illemba Police Division at Ajangbadi, Ojo.

He told the court that the defendant stood surety for one Rasaq Olayiwola and one Sunday Adewuni, who were involved in a case of obtaining money by false pretences and stealing of N1.01 million.

Uche said that the defendant promised to produce the suspects at the police division on April 17 at noon and every other day they would be needed.

He said that the surety failed to produce the suspects when needed.

According to the police, the defendant is required to show cause why a bail bond of N500, 000 he entered into on April 14 should not be forfeited in line with Section 123 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The  judge granted the defendant bail in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

He adjourned the case until May 19 for trial. (NAN)
