SWEDISH teen climate activist, Greta Thunberg, on Friday, displayed her iconic hand-painted sign declaring a school strike while onboard a racing yacht ferrying her to New York.
Thunberg’s post on social media shows her displaying her sign against the backdrop of a big wave and the position of the yacht and the entry “School strike week 52”.
She began her strike outside the Swedish parliament on Aug. 20, 2018.
Her activism inspired other young people across Europe and beyond to demand action on climate change under the “Fridays for Future” slogan.
The 16-year-old refuses to fly, citing the CO2 emissions caused by aviation, and is travelling on the Malizia, a racing yacht captained by German sailor, Boris Herrmann and Pierre Casiraghi of Monaco.
Earlier on Friday, Casiraghi tweeted: “All is well on the boat, good vibes and no seasickness.
“I’m on watch now sailing along in the dark with everyone asleep’’.
The yacht set sail Wednesday from a marina in Plymouth in England for the estimated two-week voyage.
Conditions on the yacht are spartan.
Herrmann said there are no toilets and only thin, tube-like bunks for beds.
In the U.S., Thunberg plans to attend the UN Climate Action Summit in New York on Sept. 23 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, as well as climate protests planned for Sept. 20 and Sept. 27.
She will also visit Canada and Mexico before joining the annual UN climate change conference hosted by Chile in December.
Her father, Svante Thunberg and filmmaker Nathan Grossman, were also on board the 18-metre yacht.
