ANAMBRA Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo, has urged women in the state to take active participation in the implementation of government policies and programmes to enhance their growth and development.
Obinabo, who stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Awka, said that this would make the women to be abreast of socio-economic and political activities in the state.
“Women are the bedrock of quality foundation of the society and if they are less informed about contemporary issues, all areas will be under-developed.
“They are the engine room of homes through whom proper grooming for both male and female are done, which turns out to produce better and knowledgeable people who will contribute positively to nation building.
“If women are laid back, the grooming and development of their children will not yield fruits. So they need to get involved in the actualisation of government policies and programmes.
“Also, they need to speak up, when necessary, for effective transformation of the society because it is when you are involved in government that you can act,” she said.
Obinabo said that there were plans to engage women in government programmes, especially those in rural areas, adding that the ministry had reached out to different women groups in this regard.
She said that the groups already reached out to included: Traditional Rulers’ Wives’ Association executives, president-general of communities (women wing) and youth oraginsations.
The commissioner further stated that her engagement was inclusive of present and past executives of women community leaders in the state, assuring that faith-based organisations and other women groups would also be reached.
She said that the Gov. Charles Soludo-led administration had many programmes for the development of women, the girl-child, youths and children.
Obinabo, therefore, urged women to support government in order to achieve its desired goals for the state.
“Women can be supportive through their position as community leaders by monitoring activities in their different communities and report to the ministry for correction, where necessary.
“Women can create avenues for sensitisation and awareness for women, children and girls in their respective localities for them to live in peace and harmony.
“Women, through orgainsed groups, can access government’s assistance in empowering themselves, the girl-child and youths, thereby enhancing their living standard,” she said.
The commissioner appreciated the way the ministry was received by the President of traditional rulers’ wives’ association, Mrs Anulika Okpala and the presidents-general of the communities and women wing, led by Mrs Ifeoma Okaro.
“I am looking forward to hearing of quality sensitisation of women, young girls and youths from all the communities,” she said. (NAN)
