GABRIEL Olufunmilayo, a member of Team Nigeria participating in the Men’s World Squash Team Championship in Tauranga, New Zealand, on Friday, said the team was training hard and ready to take on any challenge.
Olufunmilayo said this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday.
NAN reports that the team, comprising Tunde Ajagbe, Onaopemipo Adegoke, Olufunmilayo and Kehinde Samuel, is one of 24 teams that have been confirmed to participate in the championship organised by World Squash Federation (WSF).
The biennial tournament, which sees four-man squads from national federations, provides the platform for the teams to battle it out for the title of World Squash Team Champions.
The tournament is scheduled to hold from Dec. 11 to Dec. 17 at the New Zealand’s Mercury Baypark Arena, and the Devoy Squash & Fitness Centre, Tauranga.
“We’re training hard as we should. I pray that my team members and I give a good account of ourselves. This tournament is one of the ways we can showcase our talents to the world.
“This will also expose us more internationally, considering the fact that come 2028 Olympics squash will be one of the sports to compete for. This experience will give us a dose of what to expect.
“We’re hopeful that we will make the Nigeria Squash Federation and all squash enthusiasts proud,” he said.
He told NAN that the team members were not discouraged by the freezing weather: “It doesn’t matter that, as a player one needs to understand that it’s important to aclamatise to any weather.” (NAN)
