ANAMBRA State government has directed the deployment of three detachments of 30 policemen each in Onitsha South Council Area to boost security in the commercial city
Their deployment will help to check recent incessant molestation and robberies in the area.
Governor Willie Obiano announced this during his political visit at Godwin Achebe Mini Stadium, Onitsha South Local Government Area, LGA.
The campaign visit attracted a good number of APGA faithful from the 200 polling units and other prominent personalities at Onitsha South.
Addressing a crowd of supporters, Obiano directed that the detachment would be commenced operations on Wednesday to tackle armed robbery challenges witnessed in the city.
He promised not relent in fighting crime and criminality in the state.
“My government has set up taskforce to pick up some criminals who molest commercial motorcyclists and tricycle operators in Onitsha under the guise of government revenue collectors.
“We have earlier stopped illegal collection of levies from the market women, `wheelbarrow pushers’, `keke’ and `okada’ rider.
“So, anyone who parades himself as government official to collect levies from you, report to appropriate authorities.
“We have 35 of them detained now and we will continue until our state is free of illegal collectors,’’ the governor said.
Obiano, then, called on people of the LGA to support his second term bid in order to enable him to continue with the transformation of the state.
Victor Umeh, the Chairman of Governor’s Re-election Campaign Committee, described the All Peoples’ Congress, APGA, as the only political party through which Ndigbo could gain relevance in the country’s polity.
He added that Obiano’s victory during the November 18 Governorship Election held great prospects for survival of `the soul of the Igbo nation’’.
Chukwuma Soludo, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, pointed out that none of the candidates contesting against Obiano had presented Ndi Anambra with a credible alternative.
He stressed that the state had overgrown era of mediocre.
In their separate remarks, the Members representing Onitsha South One Constituency in the State Assembly, Patrick Aniuno and his Onitsha South Two counterpart, Beverly Nkemdiche-Ikpeazu pointed out that since APGA had been performing there was no vacancy at Government House.
Some APGA stakeholders including Theodore Okonkwo and Olisa Aniuno said Onitsha South had every reason to support Obiano because of his security initiative that sanitised the area.
Earlier, Mofus Ezeoba, the APGA chairman for the council area, assured the governor that APGA would win in the 200 polling units in the LGA.
