Tinubu appoints special investigator for CBN, related entities

PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has confirmed the appointment of Jim Osayande Obazee, Chief Executive Officer, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria, as special investigator of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and related entities.

The appointment, which takes immediate effect, was confirmed in a letter signed by President Tinubu on Friday, July 28, 2023.

The President also said in the letter that the appointment of a special investigator, to investigate the CBN and related entities was in line with the fight against corruption and in accordance with the fundamental objective set forth in Section 15(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

The full terms of your engagement as Special Investigator shall be communicated to you in due course.

Following this appointment, Obazee is required to immediately take steps to ensure the strengthening and probity of key Government Business Entities, GBEs, further block leakages in CBN and related GBEs and provide a comprehensive report on public wealth currently in the hands of corrupt individuals and establishments (whether private or public).

Part of his duties also involves the investigation of the CBN and related entities using a suitably experienced, competent and capable team and to work with relevant security and anti-corruption agencies to deliver on the assignment.

He is also expected to weekly brief the president on the progress being made.

Realnews reports that the CBN and its former governor Godwin Emefiele have been under strict scrutiny by the new administration since May.

Emefiele was suspended on June 9, barely two weeks into the administration and he has remained in the custody of the Department of State Security, DSS.
