GERMAN Chancellor Olaf Scholz, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and Economy Minister Robert Habeck are all expected to speak at the official Protestant Church Congress in the southern city of Nuremberg.

The 38th German Protestant Church Congress, which kicked  off on Wednesday will begin with a large church service on Nuremberg’s main market square in the evening.

Many people were expected in Bavaria’s second largest city to deepen their faith together but also to discuss current social issues at the congress, which runs until Sunday.

Numerous politicians from the federal and state governments had  announced their attendance, and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is expected to welcome the guests after the church service on Wednesday.

On Saturday, Scholz, Baerbock and Habeck are expected as guests in Nuremberg.

The focus is expected to be on the effects of climate change as well as the Russian war on Ukraine.

In the Protestant Church in Germany, there are different opinions on the question of whether Germany should be supplying weapons to Ukraine.

Around 2,000 events are planned during the congress, mainly in Nuremberg, but also in the neighbouring city of Fürth. (dpa/NAN)
