GOV. Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos state has reiterated the commitment of his administration to collaborate with the private sector with a view to strengthening the tourism sector of the state.
Ambode disclosed this at the closing ceremony of Akwaaba Tourism Fair and Exhibition, held in Lagos on Tuesday.
Represented by Mr Steve Ayorinde, the Commissioner for Tourism, Art and Culture, the governor said that the partnership became necessary to promote Lagos tourism potential to the world.
According to him, Lagos state is the cultural capital of Nigeria and West Africa, the fifth largest economy in Africa and centre of business and entertainment.
“This year’s event is significant and unique as it is the very first time the Lagos State Government is partnering as well as fully participating in the Akwaaba fair to showcase its efforts and tourism potentials as a state.
“The state government’s active participation since the event started on Sept. 9, has afforded our African brothers and sisters and international community the opportunity to interact and network with the over 60 exhibitors.
“Exhibitors in the hospitality, travel, transport, tour operators and creative product sectors across Africa are here to showcase their services and products, ” he said.
He said that the state would continue to create and develop strategies to raise the bar and reposition its strength among other tourists destination in Africa and the world.
He said that government had invested heavily in key infrastructure projects aimed at having positive impacts on tourism promotion in the state.
“Some of the projects have been completed and currently in use, while some are still under construction.
“It is our belief that having a special day for Lagos state during this travel market for the first time is important.
“It will further boost the present administration’s commitment to encourage the private sector to collaborate with the state government in the development of the tourism sector.
“To celebrate and showcase Lagos today, a few key activities have been lined up to entertain and educate our guests and make them savour the unique hospitality, rich cultural heritage and entertainment that Lagos is known for.
“I urge all visitors to relax and take advantage of this unique opportunity to see, feel and explore what Lagos has got to offer,’’ he said. (NAN)
