PROF. Joy Ezeilo, founder of the WomenAid Collective (WACOL), an NGO, has commended efforts of Anambra stakeholders to fight violence against women and the girl child.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ezeilo made the commendation at the end of its one day multi stakeholders strategic conference to eliminate violence and harmful practices against women and girl child.
Mrs Egodi Igwe, the Programme Officer and Head of Communications, in a communiqué made available to NAN in Awka, stated that the conference was fruitful.
Igwe said that the conference was between the Traditional Rulers Council of Anambra, stakeholders and the WomenAid Collective (WACOL).
WACOL was in partnership with the Ford Foundation West Africa, with support from Ministries of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Justice, Women Affairs and the 50/50 Action Women of Anambra State.
The communique reported that the conference was attended by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Mr Collins Nwabunwanne, the Commissioner for Lands, Prof Offornze Amucheazie.
Also in attendance was Mrs Ify Obianabo, Commissioner for Women Affairs and the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Prof. Sylvia Ifemeje.
The communique noted that traditional rulers across the three senatorial districts under the umbrella of the Anambra state Council of Traditional Rulers, were in attendance.
NAN reports that Prof. Ogugua Ikpeze, Prof. Stella Okunna, women’s groups and civil society organisations, including the media, were in attendance.
Igwe, through the communique, listed the commitments as agreed by the traditional rulers: “That we condemn all forms of Violence against Women and Girls, including harmful practices on social norms in Anambra State, and commit to the empowerment of Women and Girls.
“That we are committed to respecting the rights of women and girls as recognised in the state, national and international laws.
”That we are committed to implementing the Supreme Court judgment that females have a right to inherit property from the family estate whether married or not.
The communique reports that the Chairman of Anambra State Council of Traditional Rulers, the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, was unavoidably absent but endorsed the resolutions of the meeting dated Aug. 27.(NAN)
