NEWS editors and producers should be equipped with contemporary and more sensitive newsman’s language, so as to be in a position to produce better quality contents.
The Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, C Don Adinuba, canvassed this view during an interaction between with news production crews of the Anambra Broadcasting Service, ABS, and the ministry of information and public enlightenment in Awka.
The event was held at the “Situation Room’’ of the ministry on June 22.
The commissioner noted that the training was aimed at bringing the two sections of Information units to interface in order to expose them to some minor errors that creep into their copies.
“The idea is toward improved copies that will make their work error-free,’’ he said.
He explained that the only way for newsmen to look over their shoulders was to identify common errors that try to destroy their copies and for them to learn from them through continuing retraining.
The commissioner emphasised brevity still remained an important means of improving copies, so as to improve the understanding by the reading and listening public.
The areas discussed during the forum centred on appropriate application of certain words and those considered vital for improved copies.
There was a discussion on gender balancing in application of words to show sensitivity to the female folks in modern society.
“The era of men-dominated society is currently giving way to a more gender sensitive era and we must strive to adapt the changing times here in Anambra too,’’ Adinuba noted.
On the use of multiple titles, the managing director of ABS, Uche Nworah, said the station would adjust to a more amenable style.
The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Tony Nezianya, the Coordinator of the Situation Room, noted that the ministry has since adopted a flexible style in the use of titles.
Tony Nweke praised the commissioner for organising the training.
A laptop and two desktop computers were presented to the ABS crew to assist them to improve their news production.
