Anambra State government has said training and retraining of healthcare workers in government service was of top priority in the state’s blueprint to consolidate the gains in the health sector.

Joe Akabuike, commissioner for Health, said this during a workshop on cancer jointly organised by Anambra State Ministry of Health and other bodies.

“This workshop is a component of Anambra State Healthcare blueprint and a demonstration of Government’s commitment toward ensuring that healthcare workers receive up-to-date knowledge in different spheres of their calling.

“Training and retraining of our healthcare workers is a top priority in government agenda to consolidate gains made in the health sector years ago,’’ Akabuike said.

“The training workshop on cancer control is the second in the series of trainings already organised this year for doctors, nurses and other health workers in the state-owned hospitals.’’

According to him the first being training on handling neonatal, prenatal postnatal issues and care.

He applauded the co-organisers of the workshop for partnering Government in an effort to provide accessible and quality healthcare services to Ndi Anambra.

“I thank the co-organisers, `Breast Without Spot, Medical Women Association of Nigeria, Anambra branch’, and Majoriebash Foundation in conjunction with American Society of Clinical Oncology, ASCO,’’ Akubuike said.

Kelechi Eguzo, the workshop coordinator, the University of Saskatechewan, Canada said that due to increasing cases of different cancers in Nigeria, health workers need to acquire up–to–date skills and techniques for detecting and controlling the scourge.

Kelechi said that similar workshops had been organised in Abia, Imo, Plateau and Sokoto states and commended the participants for staying focused throughout the duration of session.

He urged them to put into practice things learnt from the workshop.
