UNACHUKWU, Idemili South transitional chairman, has flagged-off Governor’s School’s Debate in Idemili South Local Government Area, LGA.

Unachukwu, in a speech at Our Lady’s Secondary School, Nnobi, quoted Governor Willie Obiano as saying that he had invested hugely in the education sector as one of the enablers to take the state to greater heights.

“The governor has been investing heavily in education, believing that human development is tantamount to civilization.

“Our teachers are happy because of prompt payment of salaries,’’ he noted.

He said that Anambra students had been making the state proud, noting that Regina Pacis Secondary School, Onitsha won the Technovation global competition.

He urged school children from Idemili South to emerge as the overall state winner.

Unachukwu pledged to give additional prize of N50, 000 to any pupil or student from private and public primary or secondary schools in Idemili South LGA, who would emerge as the state winner.

“If any of you wins the state debate, the person receives additional N50, 000 from me,” Unachukwu said.

Idemili South LGA Education Officer, Mrs Ngozi Onyeuma said that as a civil servant she was not supposed to make public donation but decided to stake half of her salary.

“I plead with you to study very hard and come out overall state winners. If any pupil or student from Idemili south wins the governor’s prize, I will sacrifice half of my salary,’’ she said.

Earlier, Amaka Okeke, principal, Our Lady’s Secondary School, Nnobi, said that the Governor’s School’s Debate Competition was an initiative of the Ministry of Basic Education, designed to honour Gov. Obiano.

“This year’s Governor’s School’s Debate Competition is held in collaboration with `Bring It On Africa (BIOA)’, an NGO that focuses on Youth Education and Empowerment.

“It will promote debating tactics, public speaking and global competitiveness,’’ she said.

Okeke noted that the competition was an annual event for students and pupils in both public and private schools in Anambra State.

According to her, this year’s competition kicks off next week from LGA to Zonal levels and would climax at the state level.

The cash prizes for the state grand finale are 1st Prize –N500, 000 plus a laptop each to the five debaters, 2nd Prize – N300, 000 plus a palm top computer to each of the five debaters.

The 3rd Prize – N200, 000 plus back to school pack for each of the five debaters.

She added that the overall best debater would go home with N50, 000 and lots of other consolation prizes.

The School Manager, Rev Fr. Michael H. Idoko thanked Gov. Obiano for his giant strides in the education sector and wished his school would go home with top Prize.

Cultural dances and music added glamour to the occasion.
