Travel consultant in court for allegedly swindling 22 prospective students of 1m

The police on Thursday, arraigned a 37 year old travel consultant, Babatunde Gbadamosi, was in a Magistrates’ Court  Igbosere, Lagos, for allegedly defrauding 22 prospective Canadian  students of  one million Naira.

Gbagamosi, who resides at 21, Kumoluyi St., Oko Oba, Agege. Lagos, is charged with 15 counts bordering on conspiracy, forgery, obtaining by false pretence and stealing.

The prosecutor, Insp Francis Igbinosa, told the court that the accused conspired with some others)at large) and commited the offence between 2017 and 2018 at Abeke Animaun Street, Lekki, Lagos.

Igbinosa alleged that the accused obtained the one million Naira from Flymate Nigeria Ltd, represented by Mr Sunkanmi Ali, with a promise to procure admission for the prospective students at the University of Regina in Canada.

The company, he said, later discovered from the students that the letters they got were fake.

Igbinosa said the accused on Feb. 28, defrauded Chukwuemeka Idi, Rapheal Offoelo, Micheal Anaetoh, Oyekachi Isidore, Ojo Oladokun; Omoniyi Sowode and Akinpelu Akinwunmi.

Others are, Monica Ezeh, Oladimeji Apanisil,  Justin Nwadiaru, Kehinde Pani, John Obong, Chibuzor Onuegb, Anayo Agu, Vitalis Agu  Mercy Akintunde  and Izuchukwu Axhodor, among others.

The offence, he added, contravened the provisions of sections 287, 314, 366, 370 (b) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a three-year imprisonment while Section 314 provides a 15-year jail term for offenders.

After the charges were read to him, the accused pleaded not guilty.

Magistrate M. O. Osinbajo admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N30, 000, with two sureties in like sum. Osinbajo adjourned the case until Jan. 10 for trial. (NAN)
