OBA Adedokun Abolarin, the Orangun of Oke-Ila, says true democracy in which government prioritises people-oriented policies and programmes will engender growth and sustainable development of that society.

Oba Abolarin made the remarks during an enlightenment programme organised by State’s Civic Engagement Centre on Thursday in Oke-Ila Orangun, Osun State.

The traditional ruler noted that true democracy would thrive when the government truly considered the people’s yearnings in its policy formulation, saying such democracy would definitely imbue national growth.

“In this sense, true democracy is one which strongly aligns with a bottom-up approach to governance.

“The participation of the local community in development initiatives, which allows them to select their own goals and the means of achieving them.

“This will undoubtedly ensure community ownership, commitment and accountability to the development project as it seeks development from below.

“The foregoing has vividly explained the new initiative of Adegboyega Oyetola’s administration in reaching out to the depth of grassroots for the purpose of giving the masses a sense of belonging in the state governance.

“We cannot but give due commendation to the governor for restoring democratic ideals in the state’s administration because true democracy is indeed in progress,” he said.

In their separate remarks, the Commissioner for Tourism, Dr Babawale Adebisi, former ALGON Chairman, Mr Idowu Abiodun, and former state lawmaker, Mr Azeez Olanrewaju, said the governor’s policies and programmes would better the lives of the people.

In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Civic Engagement, Mr Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, said the engagement programme was part of the governor’s effort to ensure inclusive and participatory governance.

Oyintiloye said the governor would continue to formulate policies that would always be in tandem with the wishes of the people.

He, however, appreciated the people for their unwavering support for the government, assuring them that their demands would be given adequate consideration.(NAN)
