TURKISH intelligence agents on Monday captured the nephew of U.S.-based Islamic cleric, Fethullah Gulen, in an overseas operation and brought him back to Turkey.

The Demiroren Haber Ajansi news agency said Selahaddin Gulen was wanted because he was accused of being a member of a terrorist organization. The country in which he was arrested was not specified.

Turkey blames Fethullah Gulen for a coup attempt on July 15, 2016, and also accuses him of a decades-long campaign to infiltrate state institutions.

Ankara deems his FETO movement to be a terrorist organization and has arrested thousands of people with alleged connections to both it and the cleric.

Gulen denies any involvement in the failed coup, which was launched by a faction in the military.

The authorities routinely target those with suspected links to Gulen, a former ally of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. (dpa/NAN)
