UK Prime Minister Theresa May and her Dutch counterpart Mark Rutte discussed the significance of securing smooth trade between the two states after the UK’s withdrawal from the EU during bilateral talks, the UK government said on Tuesday.

“May and Prime Minister Rutte discussed the importance of ensuring that trade between the Netherlands and the UK remained as frictionless as possible following the UK’s exit from the EU,’’ the statement read.

May and Rutte, during their talks in The Hague, also spoke about the attack on Russian ex-intelligence officer Sergei Skripal in the UK city of Salisbury, and the downing of the passenger flight MH17 over Ukraine in 2014.

The issue of post-Brexit trade between the UK and EU member states is one of the key points of concern for both sides, since they have so far failed to reach a trade agreement.

In late May, business leaders from both sides called on the UK prime minister to provide them with greater clarity on the conditions of post-Brexit trade, citing decreasing investment over the lack of information on the issue.

Future trade relations are one of the important aspects of the withdrawal because the possible UK pullout from the EU Customs Union might require the construction of a hard border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.

The probability of such a development has sparked concern among local authorities, who say it would undermine the Good Friday Agreement, which settled the years-long conflict in the area. (Sputnik/NAN)
