ANNE-Marie Trevelyan, UK’s International Trade secretary, has affirmed that the United Kingdom is Africa’s investment partner of choice for transition to green energy. This was stated at the second UK-Africa Investment Summit organized by the UK’s Department for International Trade held virtually on Thursday,  January 20.

The conference, which aimed at focusing on sustainable investment to support the continent’s evolution to clean growth, strengthen UK and African business relationships, pointed out the importance of being consistent in sustainable investment to support Africa as it progresses towards a more environmentally-friendly growth course.

The trade secretary, in her statement, stated that sustainable trade and investment are crucial for reducing global inequality, improving economies, raising incomes and creating jobs. She also echoed that the UK is working on making Africa a major trade partner, pointing that Africa is the only region in the world where men and women chose to be entrepreneurs.

“Two years on from the inaugural UK-Africa Investment Summit, the UK’s ambition to be Africa’s investment partner of choice has never been stronger. The continent has huge economic potential, and our continued partnership will help businesses capitalize on investment opportunities, supporting high value jobs and boost enterprise in every part of the UK”, she said.

Meanwhile, the UK’s DIT released that the Africa Investment Conference aligns with the UK’s aims to promote trade and investment as a driver of economic growth that can trigger positive changes in a country’s economy, helping to raise incomes, create jobs and lift people out of poverty. It is also set to bring together registered delegates for a series of panel discussions and matchmaking opportunities, and represents the lasting legacy of the UK-Africa Investment.

While reaffirming her commitment and that of the DIT, Trevelyan also stated that the DIT is supporting the UK government and the AU convention to improve African investments. “I look forward to working with leaders from the continent as they continue on this path to a greener future”, she said
