UK pledges support to Nigeria’s economic reforms

THE United Kingdom has pledged its support to the economic reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu since assumption of office, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.
UK Foreign Secretary, James Cleverly, stated this after a meeting with Tinubu on Wednesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
He said that the reforms would make Nigeria a better investment destination for UK firms in the long run.
‘’The reform programmes will make Nigeria an even more investment destination for the UK. We discussed my meeting in Lagos with entrepreneurs, technologists, business people, and people in the creative industry.’’
Cleverly said that the two countries further renewed commitments to security, trade, and investment, adding that ‘’there will be more regular ministerial and other higher level interactions.
‘’We discussed that the strong foundation stone on which our bilateral relations was built is enhanced even further.
‘’The level of innovation that I observed yesterday in Lagos provides Nigeria a platform for increasing its importance across the continent of Africa and globally.’’
He said that the president made it clear that he saw the UK as a partner country for the future, adding that ‘’I am proud to ensure we turn his desire for a very strong bilateral relationship into action’’.
On the situation in Niger republic, Cleverly said that UK welcomed the ECOWAS decisive action, strong commitment to democracy and the unambiguous message that violence is not the means to bring political change.
‘’Our commitment to democracy in Nigerian and the region is unwavering and we wish to see democracy restored in Niger and we will of course continue to work with our friends in the region, members of the ECOWAS, including Nigeria as we seek to bring stability, peace and democracy in Niger,” he said.
The UK Foreign Secretary is in Nigeria on a two-day visit as part of his three-nation Africa tour. (NAN)
