UKRAINE says it has reached an agreement with Croatia on exporting its grain via ports on the Adriatic Sea, the Foreign Ministry in Kiev said on Tuesday.
The agricultural goods are to be shipped to Croatia via the Danube River and would be subsequently transported by rail to the Adriatic Coast, it said.
The amount of grain that could be exported this way was not disclosed.
By using this transport system, Ukraine wants to circumvent a blockade by Russia in the Black Sea.
This followed Moscow’s mid-July cancellation of a grain export agreement that had been negotiated by the United Nations and Turkey.
Kiev is trying to increase exports by land via the European Union, but several neighbouring countries such as Poland are also obstructing this transport route.
Many farmers in the EU feared a drop in prices if Ukrainian grain reaches the market. (dpa/NAN)
