Ukraine's Elina Svitolina becomes latest seed to suffer early exit

UKRAINE’S Elina Svitolina said she struggled mentally as she became the latest women’s singles seed to suffer an early exit on day four at Wimbledon.
The 2019 semi-finalist, beaten by eventual winner Simona Halep two years ago, lost 6-3 6-4 to Poland’s Magda Linette in her second-round match.
The third seed’s defeat comes after Wednesday’s exits for fourth and fifth seeds Sofia Kenin and Bianca Andreescu.
“Mentally, for sure, I need to reset,” said 26-year-old Svitolina.
“Mentally, today I was not really in a good place. When you play a Grand Slam [it is a] different kind of pressure. Sometimes it’s tough to handle but it’s part of the job – it is part of the Grand Slam.
“You have to try to be strong, try to be good to yourself and try to overcome the fears, the difficulties. Today probably I was not fresh mentally to do that.
“Right now I wouldn’t say it’s very smooth times in my career. It’s [a] tough time, but I have been in these situations in my career a few times.”
