UMUNZE Youths Association on January 24, conducted free, fair and transparent election for the Tri-cyclists under Orumba South Cyclist Union.
This was after due consultations with all stakeholders, in a bid to upholding and maintaining lasting peace in the town.
The Tri-cyclists (Okada) Union had been embroiled in leadership tussle, with many attempts to resolve the issues being aborted.
Lately, however, the union split into three factions: Orumba South Cyclist Union, Human Rights Legal Aid Initiative Incorporated International, and Motorcycle Transport Union of Nigeria.
They were all under distinct leaderships with each striving unsuccessfully to control the union.
J. C Onyeakpa, the past local government leaders, and Ray Onyegu, the current Transition Committee, chairman made futile attempts too at reconciliation.
A lack of legitimacy in these factions often led to violent clashes that resulted to injuries and massive loss of property.
This attracted the attention of the youths, which eventually intervened; they engaged the different factions, leading to agreement for peaceful resolution of the matter.
The peaceful resolution, then paved the way for the staging of credible election.
The three factions were then unified under one umbrella, and the election as well conducted with a consensus candidate Chukwuka Okafor emerging as chairman of the union.
