–

IT’s official: The world has its next top diplomat. Moments ago, the United Nations General Assembly voted to confirm António Guterres as the ninth UN Secretary-General. He will take office on January 1, 2017.

The UN Security Council nominated Guterres last week. He has spent a decade leading the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR, and he’s the first former Prime Minister to be chosen for the role of Secretary-General. But the position of UN Secretary-General is one of the world’s toughest jobs, and Guterres has proven that he is well-equipped to lead‎.

Guterres will become Secretary-General during an era of complex global challenges when strong UN leadership is vital to peace and progress.

Interconnected issues – including swelling refugee populations, violent extremism, and persistent inequality – defy borders and demand effective collaboration. Historic 2015 agreements on climate change and sustainable development are poised to transform our world.

Guterres, a visionary leader who knows how to get things done, will help the UN realize these promises. With his demonstrated track record of bold leadership, deep commitment to international cooperation, and tireless advocacy for the rights and dignity of the most vulnerable, Mr. Guterres is capable of bringing new ambition to the UN during this critical time.‎

A statement from the United Nations Foundation signed by Kathy Calvin, it’s president and chief executive officer, made available to Realnews October 13, congratulates the next Secretary-General and look forward to continuing our long standing partnership when he gets to work next year.
