THE 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets of the UN has been successfully translated into Yoruba language.
The document containing the translation was launched at the ancient Mapo hall in Ibadan on Wednesday by the UN Information Centre (UNIC) in Nigeria and Oyo State Government.
Mr Roland Kayanja, the Director of UNIC, explained that the SDGs and targets were first translated into Yoruba language because it was one of the most widely spoken indigenous language in Africa.
Kayanja said that the initiative would herald mass mobilisation to achieving the SDGs among the Yoruba speaking people and pledged the commitment of UN to support Oyo State Government in promoting cultural values.
Mr Toye Arulogun, the state’s Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, said that the translation of the SDGs into Yoruba language would serve as catalyst toward achieving the UN goals by the proposed year 2030.
Arulogun said that the state government had keyed into the SDGs as part of commitments to improve the welfare of the people.
Chief Bamiji Ojo, a journalist and Yoruba language enthusiast, expressed delight over the successful translation of the SDGs into Yoruba language, describing it as the right step toward preserving indigenous language.
The document containing the Yoruba translation of the SDGs was formally launched by the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Lekan Balogun.
The SDGs and targets of UN was initiated to build on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) aimed at realising human rights of all and achieving gender equality.
The UN believed that the translation would be a better way of communicating the goals and targets for inclusive participation. (NAN)
