THE United Nations was not involved in the evacuation of members of the White Helmets from Syria, UN Secretary-General spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said on Monday.

“We were not involved in this transfer; UNHCR has received them in Jordan.

“As I said, they are very thankful to the generosity of the Jordanian people for hosting these 422 Syrian citizens,’’ Dujarric said.

On Sunday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the Israeli authorities had evacuated the White Helmets activists from Syria, particularly, at the request of U.S. President Donald Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The White Helmets volunteer organisation considers itself a non-governmental organisation aimed at protecting Syrian civilians.

However, Syrian President Bashar Assad claims that the group is affiliated with the al-Qaeda terrorist organisation (outlawed in Russia).

Moscow and Damascus have accused the White Helmets of helping stage the chemical attack in the town of Duma on April 7 that prompted the U.S., the UK and France to launch over 100 missiles on multiple targets in Syria a week later. (Sputnik/NAN)
