UN S-G appoints Mali’s Ayoya as MINUSCA’s Deputy Special Rep

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has appointed Mr Mohamed Ayoya of Mali as the Deputy Special Representative in the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
Ayoya will also serve as the Resident Coordinator for the Central African Republic (CAR), as well as Humanitarian Coordinator.
Farhan Haq, Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General made the announcement at a news conference at the UN headquarters, New York, on Monday.
According to Haq, Ayoya succeeds Ms Denise Brown of Canada who was appointed as the UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine.
“The secretary-general is grateful for her dedicated commitment to recovery, humanitarian, and peace-building efforts in the CAR.
“Ayoya brings over two decades of professional experience and extensive knowledge of humanitarian affairs, with a particular focus on complex emergencies and child protection issues in field settings.
He served since early 2022 as the Representative of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Afghanistan.
“He has also served as UNICEF Representative in other conflict settings, notably in Somalia and South Sudan between 2019 and 2022, where he worked closely with UN peace operations, as well as in Guinea (2013-2016) and Zimbabwe (2016-2019)’’.
Ayoya holds a medical degree from the University of Bamako in Mali and a doctorate in nutritional sciences from US’s Cornell University.
Ayoya is fluent in English, French, Tamasheq, Bamanan and Songhai. (NAN)
