UN Women have called for reduction in electoral violence against women in Nigeria.
Ms Beatrice Eyong, UN Women Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS said this at a consultative Dialogue with stakeholders by Women Situation Room in Nigeria (WSRN) in Abuja on Tuesday.
Eyong, represented by Mr Desmond Osemenhejie, Programme Specialist, said that women were at the receiving end of electoral violence in the society.
She identified electoral violence against women as the reason for women’s apathy and complacency in political participation.
“GBV impacts negatively on Women, it reduces the number of women contesting election.
“Even up till now women are being politically violated through many ways like stripping them of their tickets etc,” she said.
Mrs Joy Onyesoh, National Coordinator, Women Situation Room in Nigeria (WSRN) identified harmful cultural practices and patriarchal mentality as the bane of violence against women.
Onyesoh called for immediate address of the patriarchal issues that drive violence against women through orientation and advocacy.
