Under-20 WAFU: Gambia win trophy, qualify for AFCON junior tournament

THE Junior Scorpions of Gambia on Sunday won the Zone A West African Football Union (WAFU) tournament by beating hosts Senegal 4-3 on penalties in the final match played in Thies, 70 km east of Dakar.

The match ended 2-2 after extra time and the Gambians won the penalty shootout to pick the only ticket for the AFCON juniors tournament, scheduled for February-March 2021 in Mauritania.

The Gambians raced into the lead in the fourth minute from Habibou Mendy before Dion Lopy equalised in the 45th minute.

The Gambians went ahead again in the 57th minute from Kajjaly Drammeh but Libasse Guèye equalised for the Senegalese.

The Junior Scorpions beat two favourites on their way to the title, overcoming Guinea in the semi-final and Senegal in the final.
