MR Abel Omolu, former chairman, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), Warri district, has urged the Federal Government to review academic curriculum of tertiary institutions to  accommodate entrepreneurship development.

Omolu made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Warri.

He said that the idea would help to address the unemployment rate that had plagued the country over the years.

The former chairman said that unemployment had become a serious concern to successive governments in the country.

He highlighted the need to encourage vocational skills at the tertiary institutions to address the scourge.

“The way out is for the government to holistically review the curriculum of the tertiary institutions to accommodate entrepreneurship development.

“The students will be equipped with the necessary vocational skills. Upon graduation, they will have something to do instead of waiting endlessly in search of jobs,” he said.

The tax expert urged the Federal Government to prioritise policies and programmes that would promote inclusive economic growth.

According to him, the initiative will help to address the myriads of economic challenges, reduce inequalities and by implications fostering sustainable development in the country.

Omolu identified low productivity and corruption as some of the remote causes of the economic hardship in the country.

He also identified the removal of fuel subsidy, unification of the exchange rate, Naira redesign policy and insecurity as some of the immediate causes of the prevailing economic hardship.

Omolu, who said that the current economic situation had led to depression and increase in crime rate in the society, called for the government’s urgent intervention.

“Insecurity, kidnapping, banditry, unemployment and underemployment, child labour and other crimes are on the increase due to the economic situation in the country,” he said.

Omolu advised Nigerians to adjust their lifestyles and live according to the current economic realities. (NAN)
