THE University of Calabar and the Garden City University College, (GCUC) Kumasi, Ghana have pledged to collaborate on capacity building and training of Midwives.

This was made known when a team from the GCUC paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor of UNICAL, Prof. Florence Obi, in Calabar.

Mr Albert Acquah, GCUC Founder, who led the team, said that because of the strategic importance of the Midwifery profession, there was need to share ideas and knowledge to further uplift the profession.

He explained that they had come to seek collaboration with UNICAL on the training of Midwives, expressing optimism that the collaboration would be sustained.

He expressed hope that the collaboration would open vistas of opportunities for youth employment and skills acquisition.

Responding, Obi reaffirmed her administration’s position to lead the African continent in Midwifery training for a better health care system.

Obi said that the visit would allow for collaboration in building and training midwives through the GCUC in Ghana.

She said that the place of midwives in the health care sector was very essential because it is the entry point in life.

“Our mothers have no reason to die during pregnancy because the place of midwives in the health care sector is very crucial because for me, that is the entry point,” she said.

According to the VC, UNICAL has the cream of trainers and experienced teachers, who are always ready to bring their wealth of knowledge to bear when duty calls on them.

“We are happy that we have a crop of such professionals that can deliver on the training of midwives.

“We don’t only have experience in the field but experience in the classrooms,” she said.
