The United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF) in collaboration with High Level Women Advocates (HILWA) has selected 360 young school girls for special training on skills acquisition in Katsina State.
HILWA chairperson, Hajiya Mariya Abdullahi stated this during the opening ceremony of the 2018 International Day for the Girl-child celebration on Wednesday in Katsina.
She said that UNICEF and HILWA were aware that not all girl children have the capacity to further their studies, hence the need to train them on skills that would help them earn a living after completing secondary school.
“The theme of the second day of the programme which is part of International Day for the Girl-child is ‘WITH HER: A Skilled Girl Force.’
“UNICEF and HILWA have invited experts that will teach young girls different trades that will assist them in life.
“The 360 girls are selected from six local government councils of Baure, Batsari, Faskari, Kankara, Kankia and Rimi.
“We selected 60 girls from each of the local governments for the skills acquisition training in different trades.” she said
Abdullahi said that eight girls have been selected to attend a four-day National Level Awareness and Consciousness Advocacy that would take place in Kano state next month.
She said that a total of eight girls from each of the six girl-child states and six girls from six non-girl-child states would attend the programme.
“We will give the girls different skills that will make them self reliant even after their marriage,” she said.
The chairperson commended UNICEF for introducing the skill acquisition training for the girls in Katsina State. (NAN)
