UNICEF says its He for She (he4she) project for school age boys would curb various forms of violence against the girl-child in the Northern states of Bauchi, Katsina and Zamfara.
The UNICEF Education Specialist, Azuka Menkiti, made the remark at the opening of a two-day Media Dialogue on G4G (Girls for Girl) organised by UNICEF in collaboration with the Child Right Act Bureau, Federal Ministry of Information and Culture in Zamfara on Tuesday.
She said that the participating school boys and their teachers were trained on championing girl-child education to create healthy relationship with girls and protect them at all times.
According to her, the aim of the training was to ensure that the boys support the girl-child in the pursuit of basic education and beyond.
Menkiti said that UNICEF had already established G4G groups in various schools for the girls to discuss issues that affect girls retention and completion of basic education and beyond.
“The ‘He for She’ project will reduce various forms of violence between boys and girls, girl-child and male-teachers as well as father and daughter because they are trained to champion the girl-child education.
“From the recent training, the boys are beginning to understand the constraints of the girl-child in staying and completing basic education and they are now becoming involve in helping their sisters.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that UNICEF has trained 100 boys in each state of Bauchi,Katsina and Zamfara.
