The UNICEF will be lighting one of Nigeria’s most iconic landmarks blue to celebrate World Children’s Day on Tuesday, November 20, as a symbol of need to re-commit to children’s rights and well-being.
We invite you to attend a lighting ceremony that will begin at 6.00 pm at the Abuja City Gate on Tuesday, November 20, and will be attended by children.
The event will mark the importance of drawing leaders’ attention to children’s rights in Nigeria and around the world.
Abuja’s City Gate will join the Empire State Building in New York, Sydney Opera House in Australia, Petra in Jordan, the Beijing National Aquatics Centre and Water Cube in China, and Eden Park in New Zealand – all national landmarks that will be lit bluefor children.
The lighting comes with a global request asking individuals to sign a global online petition asking for ‘children to be put back on the agenda.’
“We want to build a world where every child is in school, safe from harm and can fulfil their potential – and nowhere is this more true than in Nigeria,” Mohamed Fall, UNICEF’s representative in Nigeria, said.
“No matter where a child is born – whether into wealth or poverty – they and their parents have the same hopes and dreams for their future. And we owe it to all children to give them a fair chance to survive and fulfil those dreams,” Fall added.
