THE College of Medicine (CMUL), University of Lagos (UNILAG), on Thursday inducted 36 nurses, with awards given to the best graduating students from the department.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the induction is the fourth nursing induction and award ceremony , with the theme, “The Nurse: A Voice to Lead- Invest in Nursing and Respect Rights to Secure Global Health”.
The Provost of the College, Prof. David Oke, in his welcome address reiterated the fact that as nurses, they are advocates for their patients and must balance their actions in the delivery of patient care.
Oke reminded the inductees of the five basic principles of ethics which are autonomy, beneficence, justice, non-maleficence, privacy and confidentiality.
He encouraged the nurses to further hone their skills, expand and extend their horizons as there are many specialties in nursing which range from anesthesia, orthopedics, geriatric, midwifery, and family nursing among others.
He, therefore, advised them to explore and focus on the specialty options that suit them most for their professional development.
The induction lecturer, Dr Joel Aluko of the Department of Nursing Sciences, University of Ilorin, said that nurses are the backbone of the nation healthcare system.
Aluko emphasised that their voices and perspectives were crucial in shaping policies and practices that impact patient care.
He said it was necessary to reflect upon the profound impact that nurses could have in achieving global health security and shaping the future of healthcare.
According to him, the challenges that lie ahead are formidable, but their dedication, resilience, and unwavering commitment to excellence will serve as a guiding light, illuminating the path toward a healthier, more equitable world.
NAN also reports that the ceremony witnessed recognition and presentation of awards to the best graduating students from the department.
