THE male football team of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) have qualified for the quarter final of the Higher Institution Football League (HiFL) after a 2-2 draw with the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue.

Also known as Unilorin Warriors, the team led by Coach Isiaka Gambari, defeated their counterparts from the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, 3-2 on aggregate to book one of the tickets of the last eight stage.

While the boys had earlier defeated the Makurdi based team 1-0 at their home ground in the first leg of the round of 16 encounter, the 2-2 all draw in Ilorin on Wednesday would eventually had a recourse to the away goal rule to scale through.

The match played at the main bowl of the Unilorin Sports Complex saw the home side coming back from a two goal down to secure a draw against their apparently physical opponent who are also the inaugural champions of the league.

Goals from John Aogo and Unite Amodu had earlier pushed the visitors to a comfortable lead before Jamiu Mujeeb’s strike from the spot kick in the stroke of the half time trimmed their lead.

The game stretched on with the two sides still seeking further answers in the second half, Mustapha Ogungbenro, who scored the lone goal for the Unilorin team in their first leg victory headed home the second goal in the 59th minutes to hand his side their fervent wish.

The Unilorin team will now continue their search for glory in the fourth edition of the league when they face Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, in the quarter final game which is billed to be a two legged affair. (NAN)
