THE Lagos State University of Education (LASUED) Management on Tuesday met with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) LASUED Chapter to resolve conflicts to halt imminent crisis in the school.

The session was held at the Vice-Chancellor’s office, after the union’s congress in the school earlier on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that a similar meeting was held on Monday to proffer a soft-landing for the parties to broker peace.

It reports that the union on Saturday, at a news conference held in the school, reeled out demands and challenges militating against effective teaching and learning in the institution which is barely three years old.

The union had listed some of the challenges to include poor staff welfare package, dearth of facilities, epileptic electricity supply and non-existent internet network connectivity.

Others are lopsided admission process, challenges in teaching and learning in the two campuses of the school at Epe and Ijanikin Lagos State, among others.

Speaking in an interview with NAN before the session, the LASUED Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Bidemi Lafiaji-Okunneye, said that, the institution had just undergone the National Universities Commission’s (NUC) accreditation with commendation from the commission for improved infrastructures and amenities to enhance teaching and learning.

Lafiaji-Okunneye, who described the union’s alleged misgivings as trump-up allegations, said that the management had been up and doing in the provision of aids to teaching and learning in the community.

She said that the institution, in spite not having Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), had in the last two years refurbished lecture theatres and office buildings to encourage teaching and learning in the place.

“Management has continued to prioritise staff welfare with many beneficiaries of conference, journal and other intervention funds.

“Wages and allowances are being harmonised and reviewed upward to motivate staffs to put in their best,” she said.

The university boss, who did not disclose an amicable resolution with ASUU-LASUED, asked the union to conduct its affairs within stipulated labour rules and not to resort to unruly acts.

The ASUU-LASUED Chairman, Dr Akolade Lapite, said that the union was open to negotiation and interface with the management in order to resolve the issue.

Akolade, said that the union was procedural in its approach to make the institution better with needed infrastructure, amenities and staff welfare, which he said, were cardinal to the pressure group.(NAN)
