Uche Obidiegwu, the director of Sandwich Unit, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, has called on authorities in education to prioritize skills-acquisition in school curricula. She said that doing so had become imperative in order to impart positive values to them.
Speaking on the challenges in the education sector, Obidiegwu said that when students are taught skill acquisition in schools, they would easily actualize their potentials in life.
“The problem with the nation’s education system is that it is certificate-oriented rather than talent-oriented.
“It is regrettable that some students in the tertiary institutions pursue the acquisition of certificates at all cost and sacrifice quality, standard and practice on the altar of mediocrity,’ she said.
Obidiegwu expressed dismay that the situation is being aggravated by some leaders who do not value standard and are wrongly emulated as role models by some youngsters.
She further advocated that parents and church leaders be properly guided to lay good examples for the youths to emulate.
